“Never get involved when people are talking politics and religion”.
As I drove along the Murrumbidgee River and into the picturesque country town of Gundagai, I found myself surprised by my surroundings. What was normally a very lush and green area of the Riverina, was now the driest I had ever seen it. Located between Sydney and Melbourne, this small NSW town is home to Margaret Edwards. Born and raised here, Margaret’s parents even bought the rights to ‘The Dog on the Tucker Box’, a well-known historical monument and tourist attraction. I was lucky enough to meet Margaret at the local retirement village in Gundagai. Margaret struck me as a very soft spoken lady, the type of woman who would never raise her voice at anyone. Margaret was born on the 22nd of May, 1939. At 19 years old, she was married to her husband Reg Edwards and their wedding photo was printed in the local newspaper that she was very proud of . Margaret shared this special memory with me, showing me the newspaper clipping, which she still has with her today. A mother to 4 boys, Margaret is also a proud grandmother and great grandmother. She told me that her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren are all part of the most memorable times of her life. Margaret had a very close relationship with her mother. She told me how it was one of the saddest days for her when her mother passed away. When I asked her what she would change if she had her life over again, she told me it would be the passing of her mother. I love asking the people I meet about their inspirations in life and their secrets to living a full life. It was no surprise that Margaret told me - “be kind and true to others, and don’t treat people badly”.
